Download Steno

Steno 1.1 for Apple silicon Macs on macOS 13 or later. Free and open source. The download is about 440 MB.

  1. Open the DMG. Open Steno-1.1.0.dmg from your Downloads folder.
  2. Drag Steno into Applications. In the window that opens, drag Steno onto the Applications folder.
  3. Open Steno. Open it from Applications. If macOS asks whether to open an app downloaded from the internet, choose Open.
  4. Follow the setup guide. It asks for Microphone, Accessibility and Input Monitoring, one at a time, and ends with a first dictation. After that, hold Option in any app, talk, and let go.
